Duties

 

  • Support manufacturing department with product development and testing.
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with Occupational Health and Safety Act. 1993, and the regulations promulgated thereunder.
  • Evaluates electrical/mechanical systems, products, components and applications by designing and conducting research programs.
  • Plan and implement research methodology and procedures to apply principles of electrical theory to engineering projects
  • Proactively identify problem areas for breakdowns and take steps to rectify the equipment’s through application of trouble shooting tools.
  • Discuss potential and existing engineering projects with relevant head of departments, customers and subject matter experts.

  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis investigations of plant equipment failures to reduce breakdown hours on plant equipment.
  • Revised existing and or create new work plans, workflows, staffing and schedules according to the quality management system of the client ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001.
  • Investigate possibilities of improving plant equipment availability and the implementation of condition base monitoring systems (oil -kidney recycling filtration, infra-red scanning HT/LT electrical systems, vibration monitoring systems, etc.)
  • Executing cost saving and energy saving techniques/ measures and modifications to achieve substantial reduction in Operations & Engineering Maintenance expenditures.
  • Provide quality assurance for new and ongoing projects and compiling the CAPEX for specific project.
  • Planned, drafted, executed, maintained and improved electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, components and systems; controlled computer-aided engineering and designed equipment to perform engineering tasks.
  • Examined installations and observed operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and provided technical assistance to personnel in the areas of high/medium voltage distribution equipment installed.
  • Review tasks to be completed for achievement of next deliverables and milestones with pre-selected contractors for doing the work and agree actual/likely completion dates. Identify appropriate remedial actions and discuss and agree their feasibility and effectiveness.
  • Planning and scheduling SOP’s, SWP’s to achieve pre-set goals within time parameters. Formulating long term/short term strategic plans for the maintenance department to enhance operations utilization from 86% upwards and reduced maintenance cost.
  • Develop budgets, estimating labour, material, and construction costs
  • Prepare equipment specifications for purchase of materials and equipment required for upgrades or new projects confirmed.
  • Initiate Reliability centred maintenance (RCM) process to optimize the maintenance program of the company or facility to ensure that systems continue to do what their user require.
  • Design and improve electrical drawings, equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems according to legislation and the company standard.
  • Approve Engineering designs handed in by 3rd party contractors.
  • Management of sub-contractor’s process to ensure compliance with all applicable statutory requirements, legislation and site operating procedures.
  • Approve Equipment specifications and recommend changes to all Engineering standards and ensure all relevant documentation is updated accordingly into CMMS database.
  • Inspect completed installations and observe operations, to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational and safety standards of the industry before and after handover.
  • Ensure all Management of Change (MOC) procedures comply with HSE standards, correctly updated and approved by all relevant stake holders on the Docunet system.

  • Design of inhouse electrical installation, motor pump sets, distribution equipment, etc.
  • Approve Engineering designs handed in by 3rd party contractors.
  • Approve equipment specifications and recommend changes to all Engineering standards and ensure all relevant documentation is updated via the project drawing office.
  • Discuss and approve all equipment specifications with SME’s and contractors.
  • Proactively identify areas of obstruction through the plant area and take steps to rectify/redesign the plant equipment’s through computer aided application tools and external resources.
  • Draft plans and compile proposal documents for the areas of obstructions identified and present to management and board members of the company.

Maintenance Practises implemented

  • Implementation of vibration monitoring system on Ball Mill Mechanical rotating equipment and reducing maintenance cost with 20% annually. (Drive end & non-drive end bearings; gear units).
  • Implement infrared scanning done by 3rd party company on motor control centres switching gear, buss-bar sections, auxiliary transformers, furnace transformers primary and secondary connection sections, just to name a view, to identify hotspot area’s which could result in unnecessary breakdowns and high cost repairs.
  • Replacement of thermal overload relays with electronic overload relays which connect to the PLC for monitoring equipment conditions and building a data base of crucial equipment across the plant areas.
  • Introduce variable speed drives and reduce the electrical cost by 30% annually, which also increase the life expectancy on mechanical equipment and the repair cost there off.
  • Also install variable speed drives for close monitoring on equipment conditions to identify problems beforehand.

Special Projects and Accomplishments

  • Building a new motor control centre and upgrading old electrical cubicles to new cubicles including the switchgear there off.
  • The fabrication, inspection and the installation of new High-tension cable racks and cables, high tension switchgear and high-tension distribution transformers to increase the electrical capacity system for existing and future projects across the plant area.
  • Upgrade 185 kW high pressure pumps from electrical direct-on-line to variable speed drives controlled via the programmable logic control centre.
  • Upgrade induction furnaces control equipment as well as the high-tension switch gear and high-tension transformer, 11/6.6 kV.
  • Rebuild and refurbishment of the overhead 12-ton Morris crane electrical control panel and all caballing thereof.
  • Responsible for the planning, controlling and monitoring of the responsibilities dedicated to subject matter experts for the major shutdown held during 2010 on the open arc furnace.
  • Purchase and installation of the Dockleveller air lifts at the final product dispatch area to ensure the safe off loading and loading of abnormal shipping containers.
  • Upgrade and standardize, according to OHSACT and SANS 10142 all small power, (distribution boards, emergency distribution boards, un-interrupted power supply units, generating sets) being used at various plant areas
