Radiologist – New Zealand

As a Radiologist in New Zealand, you will join a collegial and supportive environment, working collaboratively with fellow specialists and healthcare providers to deliver patient-centered, high-quality care. This role offers a blend of clinical responsibilities, leadership opportunities, and continuous professional development in a modern healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnostic Imaging: Interpret X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, and other medical images to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Patient Care: Ensure imaging procedures are safe and appropriate, providing guidance on imaging strategies tailored to each patient’s needs.
  • Interventional Radiology: Perform minimally invasive, image-guided procedures such as biopsies, catheter insertions, and drainages.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Consult with referring physicians and participate in team meetings to contribute to complex case discussions and treatment planning.
  • Quality and Safety Oversight: Maintain and enhance imaging quality standards and radiation safety protocols; ensure best practices in radiologic procedures.
  • Education and Mentorship: Instruct and mentor junior doctors, radiology trainees, and medical students through lectures, clinical training, and supervision.
  • Research and Innovation: Engage in clinical research and contribute to publications; stay updated with advancements in radiologic technology and practice.
  • Administrative Duties: May involve departmental management, development of protocols and policies, and contributing to strategic initiatives related to imaging services.

Salary, Allowances & Leave:

  • Base Salary: Based on experience, progressing annually on a 15-step pay scale per collective agreements.
  • Allowances: Additional compensation for on-call work, night/weekend shifts, job size, special contributions, and recruitment/retention.
  • Leave Entitlements:

    • 6 weeks paid annual leave.

    • Minimum 10 days of sick leave annually.

    • 10 days paid Continuing Medical Education (CME) leave.

    • Up to 12 months parental leave (with 6 weeks paid).

    • 12 paid public holidays plus alternative leave if rostered on.

Job Requirements: 

To be eligible for a Radiologist position in New Zealand, candidates must meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:

Educational & Professional Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree: MBChB or an equivalent qualification from a recognised medical school (5–6 years undergraduate).
  • Internship: Completion of a 1-year internship (House Officer Year).
  • General Registration: Eligibility for or possession of general medical registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Specialist Radiology Training:

  • Radiology Residency: Completion of a 5-year specialist training programme in Radiology, accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) or equivalent.
  • Fellowship: Fellowship with RANZCR (FRANZCR) or an equivalent qualification to practise independently as a specialist Radiologist in New Zealand.

Clinical Experience:

  • Demonstrated clinical experience in diagnostic imaging and/or subspecialty areas such as Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology, or Paediatric Radiology.
  • Experience with interventional procedures and advanced imaging interpretation is highly desirable.

Professional Registration & Development:

  • MCNZ Registration: Must be registered or eligible for registration with the MCNZ.
  • Professional Bodies: Membership or affiliation with relevant professional bodies such as RANZCR.
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Ongoing participation in CPD to maintain skills and licensing.

Language Proficiency:

  • English Proficiency: Fluency in English is required. International graduates may need to demonstrate proficiency via IELTS or OET unless trained in an English-speaking country.
