  • A Millwright is a skilled trade responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and dismantling industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • The role involves interpreting technical drawings, troubleshooting mechanical issues, aligning and calibrating equipment, and ensuring machinery operates efficiently and safely.
  • The millwright will work with a variety of tools and precision instruments, often collaborating with engineers, electricians, and production teams to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
  • Key skills include electrical and mechanical aptitude, problem-solving, attention to detail, and adherence to safety standards.

 

Role Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Safety 

  • Identify specific safety hazards that will be encountered in the performance of your work and take corrective action to minimize these. Perform LRA 
  • Apply LOTOTO before starting a task. 
  • Wear required personal protective clothing provided by the company. 
  • Escalate and rectify any safety issues within their work area  Adhere to all SHEQ procedures and policies.

 

Quality 

  • Ensure that the quality of the product is strictly adhered to always. 
  • Ensure that maintenance is done using the correct materials and tools  Make sure that all tools used are safe without defects and locked away at the end of each day. 
  • Determine and include QA/QC requirements on jobs. 
  • Participate and ensure a high standard of Quality work always.

 

Operational 

  • Perform daily inspection. 
  • Responsible for maintaining production equipment availability and performance at satisfactory levels through planning, scheduling, coordinating and reporting of repair activities. 
  • Ensure resources are allocated and adequate to complete these tasks. 
  • Must be able to identify and prioritize multiple projects and perform work with a constant awareness of improving processes. 
  • Troubleshoot systems/process problem and the repair of such work. 
  • Attend to and rectify all breakdowns and stoppages. 
  • Ensure legal compliance on all machines and equipment. 
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the area of responsibility in line with 6S. 
  • Assist in other areas/divisions in the company when needed.  Ensure reduction of breakdowns through quality workmanship thereby increasing the unit operating efficiency (OE). 
  • Ensure planning and execution of all planned maintenance activities. 
  • Be involved in all Focused improvement sessions and contribute to the reduction of major losses. 
  • Ensure the implementation of all improvements. 
  • Gather necessary engineering of technical documents, specifications and drawings. 
  • Write clear and concise work procedures. 
  • Preparation of reports, metrics, and use of other tracking tools is key to the success of this position. 
  • Plan and arrange for parts required to perform work. 
  • Do normal break down and autonomous work orders in conjunction with the monthly, daily and weekly schedules. 
  • Be available after hours and for standby. 
  • Troubleshoot system problems and the repair of such work.  Perform duties on workshop floor.

Educational Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualification/s and/or formal training
  • N2 Qualification
  • Qualified (RED SEAL) Millwright – NOT recognition of prior learning
  • Preferably 2-3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
  • 60% Electrical and 40% Mechanical skills
  • Experience on 3 Phase motors
  • Knowledge of VSD’s (siemens)
  • Basic Instrumentation
  • Experience of P.P.M. (Planned Preventative Maintenance)
  • Must have worked on Automation in a Continuous process plant
  • Knowledge of Industrial Automation and Production processes
  • Experience and knowledge of Electro-Pneumatic
  • Knowledge of Hydraulics
  • Experience and knowledge of Pumps
  • Experience and knowledge of Gas Burners
  • Knowledge of Vacuum Systems
  • Must have worked on conveyor systems
  • Lock-Out Procedures
  • Preferably SAP experience
  • Computer Literacy: Windows, MS Office –Excel, Word &Outlook

 

Experience

  • Experience of working in an industrial environment in a Millwright or similar role for +3 years.
  • Excellent influencing skills being able to explain mechanical & electrical issues in a manner which people from all levels of the business engage with and strive to adopt.
  • Excellent communication skills being able to work with and train people on maintenance procedures from all levels of the Business.
  • A systematic, logical and analytical approach with attention to detail is important for the compilation and operation of safety management systems.
  • Project management experience to lead, drive and implement projects to identify, reduce or eliminate risk.
