Set up and operate conventional lathe to machine plastic components.

Read and interpret engineering drawings, job cards, and technical specifications.

Select appropriate cutting tools, workholding methods, and machining parameters for different plastic materials.

Perform turning operations including:

Facing

Outside and inside diameter turning

Boring

Drilling

Reaming

Thread cutting

Grooving

Chamfering

Parting-off

Machine components to specified tolerances and surface finish requirements.

Measure and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments including vernier calipers and micrometers.

Carry out routine machine maintenance and report equipment faults.

Maintain accurate production and quality records.

Minimise material waste and maximise material utilisation.

Follow all company quality, health, safety, and environmental procedures.

Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workspace.

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of machining characteristics of engineering plastics.

Knowledge of appropriate cutting speeds and feeds for plastic materials.

Ability to prevent heat build-up and material deformation during machining.

Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment.

Ability to maintain dimensional accuracy and high-quality surface finishes.

Basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting skills.

Knowledge of Materials

Experience machining materials such as:

Nylon

PTFE (Teflon)

PVC

Polypropylene (PP)

Polycarbonate

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods.

Good manual dexterity.

Ability to lift materials safely in accordance with workplace procedures.

Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Production output against schedule.

Accuracy of machined components.

First-pass quality rate.

Scrap and rework percentage.

  • Trade Certificate or National Certificate in Machining, Fitting & Turning, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Trade-tested Machinist (preferred).
  • Minimum 2–5 years' experience operating  a conventional lathe.
  • Experience producing low- and high-volume precision components.
  • Experience working from engineering drawings and tight tolerances.
