- Responsible for overseeing legal operations, managing legal risk, litigation, regulatory compliance, PFA and FSCA complaints, contract management, governance support, and stakeholder engagement within the retirement fund and financial services environment.
- The role further requires strong leadership capability, technical legal expertise, and sound understanding of retirement fund legislation and regulatory frameworks
Legal Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, manage, and develop the Legal function and Legal Officers
- Allocate and manage legal workloads and monitor turnaround times Review and quality assure legal opinions, complaint responses, and legal documents
- Develop legal department strategies aligned to business objectives
- Manage legal reporting, legal risks, and legal operational processes
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance to Legal Officers Manage legal department budgets and external legal counsel costs
PFA & FSCA Complaint Management
- Oversee and manage Pension Funds Adjudicator (PFA) and FSCA complaint processes
- Review and approve complaint responses before submission
- Monitor complaint registers, case aging, and regulatory deadlines
- Coordinate information gathering and preparation of legally sound responses
- Analyse complaint trends and recommend corrective actions
- Liaise with the Principal Officer and regulators on legal and regulatory matters
Contract Management & Legal Advisory
- Draft, review, negotiate, and vet contracts, agreements, and SLAs
- Provide legal advice on transactions, governance, and operational matters
- Review company policies for legal compliance
- Maintain legal records, templates, and compliance checklists
- Advise on legal risks and enforceability of agreements
- Review tender documents and provide legal recommendations
Litigation & Dispute Resolution
- Manage litigation matters and legal disputes in the best interest of company
- Coordinate and manage external legal counsel and legal costs
- Attend Court, Tribunal, CCMA, and regulatory hearings where required
- Provide legal support on dispute resolution and whistleblowing matters
- Maintain litigation registers and provide litigation status reporting
- Conduct legal risk assessments and provide recommendations on legal strategies
Regulatory & Legislative Compliance
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting company
- Ensure compliance with the Pension Funds Act, FAIS, FICA, POPIA, Companies Act, and related legislation
- Provide legal support for regulatory inspections and information requests
- Support governance committees with legal and regulatory advice
- Assist with legal compliance reporting and risk management initiatives
Stakeholder Management
- Provide legal advice and support to internal and external stakeholders
- Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships
- Liaise with regulators, external attorneys, service providers, and industry bodies
- Support Board Committees and management with legal guidance and reporting
- Represent company on relevant industry and regulatory forums where required

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate of the High Court of South Africa
- Postgraduate qualification in Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Pension Fund Law, or related field advantageous
- Minimum 8 to 12 years post-admission legal experience
- Minimum 3 to 5 years management or leadership experience
- Experience within the financial services or retirement fund industry advantageous
- Experience managing PFA complaints and FSCA regulatory matters
- Experience in litigation, legal advisory, contract management, and governance support
- Experience managing and developing a legal team
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and legal case management systems
Knowledge & Skills: Key
- Strong knowledge of Pension Funds Act, FAIS, FICA, POPIA, Companies Act, and King IV
- Strong understanding of retirement fund administration and retirement fund legislation
- Knowledge of PFA and FSCA complaint processes
- Strong legal drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills
- Excellent planning, organisational, and administrative skills
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong stakeholder engagement and leadership capability
- Ability to work under pressure and manage complex legal matters
- Strong report writing and presentation skills
