Job Overview

  • The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare service to the employees, ensuring their health and safety, and conducting medical assessments in accordance with the OHS Act and regulations.

 

Key Performance Areas

  • Diagnosing and managing work-related conditions and injuries.
  • Conducting employee health histories and environmental assessments.
  • Conduct all types of medical fitness assessments: pre-employment, transfer, annual and exit
  • Compiling regular reports about clinic visits, incidents, and absenteeism.
  • Managing the clinic budget and medication inventory.
  • Ensure regular checks of first aid boxes.
  • Maintaining absolute confidentiality of employee health information.
  • Facilitating medical exams and assisting with medical separations.
  • Providing immediate support for on-site emergencies.
  • Keeping the clinic documentation up to date and compliant with laws and standards.
  • Ensuring the readiness of emergency equipment, according to the OHS Act.
  • Securing and managing the clinic equipment and supplies.
  • Being flexible to accommodate additional hours or standby as needed by operations.
  • Offering counselling services like EAP and HIV support.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • The Occupational Health Nurse should have the following qualifications, skills, and attributes:
  • BTech in Occupational Health (a must).
  • Professional Nursing Qualification.
  • Active registration with the South African Nursing Council.
  • Certificates for auditory and pulmonary function tests.
  • Dispensing License (a must).
  • Valid Driver's License is essential.
  • Over 5 years of exposure in Occupational Health, preferably in a manufacturing setting.
  • Familiarity with Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and HIV counselling.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills and Basic Life Support certification.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act and regulations.
  • Strong planning abilities.

 

The Occupational Health Nurse should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Clinical skills: The ability to apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose, treat, and prevent work-related health problems.
  • Occupational health and safety skills: The ability to identify, assess, and control health and safety hazards in the workplace, and to comply with the OHS Act and regulations.
  • Counselling skills: The ability to provide emotional and psychological support to employees, and to refer them to appropriate resources, such as EAP and HIV counselling.
  • Report writing skills: The ability to compile and present accurate and concise reports on clinic activities, incidents, and outcomes.
  • Budget management skills: The ability to plan and monitor the clinic budget and medication inventory, and to ensure cost-effectiveness and accountability.
  • Communication skills: The ability to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, managers, and external stakeholders, using verbal, written, and electronic methods.
  • Interpersonal skills: The ability to establish and maintain positive and respectful relationships with employees, managers, and external stakeholders, and to work effectively in a team.
  • Leadership skills: The ability to lead and motivate the clinic staff, and to coordinate and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Organizational skills: The ability to plan and prioritize work activities, and to manage time and resources efficiently.
  • Confidentiality skills: The ability to handle sensitive and personal information with discretion and respect, and to adhere to ethical and legal standards.
  • Flexibility skills: The ability to adapt to changing work demands and schedules, and to respond to emergencies promptly and calmly.
