Key responsibilities specific to the role

  • Responsible for developing a strategy and operational business plan that will deliver the targets of company Building Performance in the South African market.
  • Responsible for the delivery of budgeted sales, profit and marketing objectives.
  • Responsible for the management and development of the commercial team in South Africa.
  • Oversee the implementation of innovation across the portfolio of company Building Performance.
  • Understanding the recent strategy which has been successfully embedded, the General Manager will be responsible for bringing stability to the organization. With the recent Stucco Plaster strategy, the General Manager for company Building Systems South Africa will be responsible for driving the plaster penetration into the South African market.
  • With the entrants of new competitors in a highly commoditized market from the East, the General Manager will be expected to drive cost leadership culture within the organization (focus on reengineering and optimizing the business).
  • As a manufacture and service solutions organization, the General Manager must build a customer focused and diverse leadership team and culture, driving retention and employee engagement in line with the Global company strategy.

Company Strategy.

  • Shift the culture and behaviours in line with the company vision.
  • Providing strategic leadership to the South African business, building robust business plans and performance measures which enable value creation and business growth.
  • Play a key leadership role in guiding, coaching and mentoring the South African operation, ensuring the team is familiar with the brand values and the overall commercial strategies of company Building Performance.
  • Reviewing the leadership development, driving employee engagement, talent management and succession planning practices.

 

People Management 

  • To define build a team through objective setting in consultation with the employees.
  • To follow-up of the specification/retail/ commercial sales figures and adjust
  • the individual sales targets (take corrective measures if necessary).
  • To provide active support and coaching to sales team by visiting clients together, advising them, reading visit reports and challenging them regarding the content.
  • To animate informal regional sales meetings.
  • To hold performance, evaluation interviews.
  • To pass on leads and prospects to the team.
  • To provide strong people management leadership through resourcing, retention, performance development and teambuilding.
  • To recruit high quality staff and provide training and development opportunities per the needs of the business and the individual.
  • To build effective and appropriate behaviors and synergy between all team members, to ensure the most effective contribution to customer profitability.
  • To lead the development and effective implementation of an appropriate sales culture.
  • To inspire and motivate people to drive and achieve challenging sales objectives.
  • To foster and encourage strong and effective team working between staff from different functions within the business unit.

 

Ideally, the new General Manager will have:

  • The General Manager should have a proven track-record within the building and industrial manufacturing sectors.
  • Must have assumed commercial leadership roles with P&L responsibility
  • Some knowledge of the manufacturing sector valuable but not essential (must understand how a plant operates).
  • Experience working in a matrixed and multinational structure important.
  • 10 years commercial and sales management experience (Preference for individuals with business development, sales and marketing experience who are highly numerate and have lead businesses of equivalent size and complexity).
  • An individual with a cost leadership mindset who has reengineered and optimized business performance preferable.
  • The successful candidate must be a localized hire and bring experience within the
  • African market.
  • The business requires an individual of influence who has a team orientation and strong leadership skills, with a proven record of accomplishment in building up and leading a successful and diverse management team (must have experience managing a team of 5+ direct reports and 4 matrix reports LLT).
  • Must have experience managing a national structure.
  • Experience in Africa preferable but not essential.
  • Undergraduate Degree in Finance/Business/Sales/Engineering important. Masters (or equivalent by experience) preferable.

Education

  • Engineering or Finance qualification – advantageous
  • 10 years of GM operations experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Teams
  • Proficiency in SAP

 

Working experience

  • Good knowledge of manufacturing industry.
  • Ability to identify problems, problem solve, and take corrective action to correct the deviations.
  • Knowledge of strategies and implementation thereof.
  • Communicating effectively in the workplace.
  • Coaching and mentoring of staff members.
  • Knowledge of industry safety risks and controls.
  • Budget control and Financial aptitude and knowledge
